Tip pool calculator

Enter the night's pool and who worked. Split it by hours, by points, or evenly, and every cent is accounted for.

Hours, points, or equal shares

By hours is the most common. Each person's share is their hours divided by everyone's hours. It's simple and hard to argue with.

By points weights roles. A house might give servers 10 points, bartenders 8, bussers 5 and food runners 4. Put each person's points in the column, or multiply points by hours first if your house does both.

Equal shares fits small teams who all work the same shift.

The calculator rounds to the cent and hands any leftover pennies to the largest remainders, so the shares always add up to the pool.

Who can be in a tip pool

Under federal law, managers and supervisors can never keep any part of a tip pool. If your employer takes a tip credit (pays less than the full minimum wage because of tips), the pool can only include employees who usually get tips, like servers, bartenders, bussers and runners. If your employer pays everyone the full minimum wage, the pool can also include cooks and dishwashers. Many states add their own rules, so check the tip pooling section of your state's page.

Tip-outs you give away aren't your income. Keep a record of what you paid out each shift so you report only the tips you kept; the tip-out calculator helps with that side.
