Tip tracking
Cashout keeps cash tips, card tips and what you tipped out apart on every shift, so you know what you actually walked with and what a shift paid per hour. Tip Reporting shows whether the tips you reported to your employer match what you earned.
How it works
Tips on each shift
- When you log a shift, enter Cash Tips, Card Tips and Tip Out, the amount you paid to the bar, bussers, runners or other support staff.
- Cashout figures your net tips: cash plus card, minus tip-out.
- If you reported tips to your employer for that shift, enter them in the reported tips field.
Effective Rate
Effective Rate is your wages plus net tips, divided by the hours you worked. Cashout shows it on each shift, for each job and for any period, and on Android it also appears on the Dashboard, in Job Comparison in Insights, in your shift exports and on the tax summary PDF. It's the number that tells you whether a shift was worth it, since a slow night at a high cash wage and a busy night at a tipped wage can look very different once tips are in.
Tips in Insights
On Android, Insights shows a Tip-out Ratio, the share of your gross tips you paid out, by month, and Tip Analysis with a rolling average and a breakdown by section. On iPhone, Insights has Tip Trends. See Insights for the rest.
Tip Reporting
- On Android, open Taxes and tap Tip Reporting.
- You'll see Earned (cash plus card tips, minus tip-out), Reported and the Gap for the year so far.
- Tap through for By Month and your Last 20 Shifts, each marked as reported or showing how much went unreported.
Reported is the reported tips you entered on the shift. If you didn't enter any, Cashout uses card tips minus tip-out. The screen also reminds you that when your tips at one job reach $20 or more in a month, the IRS says to report them to your employer by the 10th of the next month. Tips you earned but didn't report are still taxable. Our guides on reporting tips to your employer and Form 4137 explain what to do about a gap.

What it doesn't do
- A tip-out is one amount per shift. Cashout doesn't record who got what on the shift itself. To work out each person's share, use Tip Split.
- Tip Reporting covers W-2 jobs only. Jobs you set up as paid on a 1099 aren't included.
- It doesn't file or send anything to your employer or the IRS. It's a record and a comparison.
- Your numbers are only as good as what you enter. Cashout doesn't connect to your employer's POS or payroll.
- The best hourly rate record on Android only counts shifts of 2 hours or more, so a short, lucky shift won't set it.
All of this works with no account and no internet.
